Why the name Five Fifths
In 1787, article one, section two of the Constitution of the United States declared that any person who was not free would be counted as three-fifths of a free individual for the purposes of determining congressional representation. In 1886, section 2 of the 14th Amendment removed this law from the Constitution, giving freed slaves full weight as citizens. Over a century after the repeal of the Three-Fifths Compromise, Black Americans still trail White Americans in several social economic categories include income, education and occupation. Our name Five Fifths is a constant reminder that Black Americans are equal to all other races, and we will work to close the gap created from this country’s founding.
